Recording, mixing and mastering at Lost Oscillation, Leith
The studio isn’t a place or a gear list. It’s a spaceship. And I know how to fly it, because I helped build it.
Dave, Fergus and I first dreamt Lost Oscillation out of an area of rented floor in MusicBase in 2015. We have been down here making it our dream space ever since. Sound treatment, Dante networks, ethernet between the rooms, Dolby Atmos, interfaces, every way there is to patch it. We even wired the plugs. You get the idea.
The control room
Home sweet home. A baby grand piano. Guitars and basses fit to get just about any job done. A wall of synths. A microphone collection chosen and built over ten years rather than bought in one go. Hand percussion from all over the world, for that last bit of ear candy.
And a 7.1.4 listening environment calibrated and certified by Dolby, built around MUM monitors from Present Day Production in London.
The live room
Almost entirely anechoic, and home to the drum sound we are so proud of. We can track a band in here with a live feel and still keep enough separation to work whatever studio magic is needed afterwards.
The house kit is a Mapex Armoury, alongside various amps, modellers and effects boxes. We recently had a couple of the soundproofed walls we built upholstered by a textile artist, in a navy blue breathable fabric, so they reflect less light while we are filming without compromising the sound treatment underneath. Obsessed, yes.
LostOsc is in MusicBase, which is a vibrant creative hub at 125 Great Junction St, Leith.
